Spielberg Castle

The origins of Schloss Spielberg date back to the 12th and 13th centuries, when it was part of the fortification system of the Counts of Truhendingen. In 1363, the estate passed into the possession of the Counts of Oettingen and later became the ancestral seat of the Oettingen-Spielberg line, which was elevated to princely status in 1734. After a brief Prussian era starting in 1796, the castle became Bavarian in 1806. In 1827, Prince Carl Philipp von Wrede acquired the property and transferred it to his daughter, Princess Amalie zu Oettingen-Spielberg. The Oettingen-Spielberg family retained the castle until 1983, when Prince Albrecht entrusted the then-ruinous complex to the Steinacker artist family.
