Spittel Castle
The Spittel+
The Spittel is a former castle of the Teutonic Order in Sumiswald, Canton Bern, Switzerland.
It is located somewhat outside the village and was donated in 1225 by Lüthold von Sumiswald with the condition that a hospital be established there – hence the name Spittel (hospital). From 1698 to 1798, the castle was the seat of a Bernese bailiwick, and in 1812 it passed to the municipality of Sumiswald. The new building erected after the fire of 1730 still houses a retirement home today.
