In the Canton of Bern, Spittel Castle has a history closely linked to the Teutonic Order. Originally founded as a hospital, it now serves as a retirement home.
History+
The origins of Spittel Castle date back to 1225. In that year, Lüthold von Sumiswald endowed the property with the condition that a hospital be established there – a provision that gave the building its name. From 1698 to 1798, the castle served as the seat of a Bernese bailiwick before passing into the possession of the municipality of Sumiswald in 1812. After a fire in 1730, the building was reconstructed.
