Spitzenberg Castle

The exact date of Spitzenberg Castle's construction is unknown. It was first documented in 1388 as the ancestral seat of the Mauerkirchner family. In 1481, ownership transferred to the Granser family. Shortly thereafter, in 1479, Friedrich Mauerkircher, who later became Bishop of Passau, received the castle as a fief. He had it fortified with a curtain wall and expanded with a new building section. After his death in 1485, his nephew Wolfgang adopted the name Spitzenberg. Upon Wolfgang's demise in 1503, the estate passed to Stephan Wäninger. During the Palatine War of Succession, Spitzenberg was occupied in 1504. In 1588, Stefan Wäninger sold the castle to his brother-in-law Joachim Rainer, who in turn sold it to Wolf Josef Hochkircher around 1590. In 1616, Pankraz von Freiberg acquired the property. Baron Adam Kaspar von Freyberg had the castle fundamentally rebuilt around 1700. The Freiberg family owned Spitzenberg until 1750, after which Franz Peter von Rosenbusch became the owner.
