Spitzhaus Castle

The origins of Spitzhaus date back to the early 17th century. In 1622, Elector Johann Georg I had a small vineyard house built on this site in the late Renaissance style, initially known as Hohes Haus due to its exposed position. After several changes of ownership, the Dresden merchant Paul Friedrich Landsberger acquired the property around 1668. Around 1672, he had the building fitted with a tall, Italianate tent roof, which gave the castle its current name, “Spitziges Haus” (Pointed House). In 1707, General Jacob Heinrich von Flemming gifted the property to Countess Cosel, who in turn passed it on to Elector August the Strong in 1710. Under his son, Elector August III, a Baroque redesign was carried out in 1749 according to plans by Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann. During this renovation, the building received a new copper spire and a two-winged open staircase.
