Spremberg Castle
Spremberg Castle is a castle in Spremberg in the state of Brandenburg.
The construction history of the oldest building in the city of Spremberg dates back to the 11th century. Initially a Romanesque moated castle, the building was expanded into an early Baroque complex under the Dukes of Saxe-Merseburg, particularly Duke Heinrich. After the extinction of the Merseburg secundogeniture and the castle's acquisition by the Electorate of Saxony in 1738, it served administrative purposes until 1997.
Today, the castle houses the Niederlausitzer Heidemuseum, the Music and Art School, and the district library of the Spree-Neiße district. Various exhibitions run throughout the year in the museum.
In the park area near the castle, there is an original Wendish farmhouse and a lapidarium with individual pieces from villages demolished due to lignite mining.
