St. Georgen Castle am Sandhof

The origins of the castle date back to the High Middle Ages, when a court called “St. Georgen undern Zolperg” was first documented at this site in 1216. Later, this court was also known as “Haus am Sand.” In 1574, the name “Sandhof” was documented when Hans von Haus inherited the property from his parents. He is considered the builder of the current castle, which was completed around 1584, as evidenced by a coat of arms from that year. After his death, his widow sold the property in 1599, after which it changed hands several times in the following decades. In 1630, Gottfried von Schrattenbach, a commander of the Teutonic Order, acquired the castle and founded the Commandery of St. Georgen in 1635. His successor, Georg Andrae von Staudach, had the chapel south of the castle renovated in 1652, which served as a burial site. St. Georgen remained in the possession of the Teutonic Order until the 20th century.
