St. Martin Castle

The first documented mention of the estate, which at the time bore the name Altschwendt, dates back to 1150 and refers to the Schwenter family as owners. After the death of the last Schwenter in 1417, Ortolf von Trennbach acquired the originally wooden aristocratic seat surrounded by a pond. From this family emerged the later Bishop Urban von Trennbach of Passau, who spent his youth here. After the Trennbach family died out in 1584, ownership passed to Veit von Tattenbach through marriage. In 1626, the castle was set on fire twice during the Upper Austrian Peasant Uprising. The subsequent reconstruction was carried out in stone and led to an enlargement. Another fire in 1723 destroyed parts of the castle, but the reconstruction, completed in 1726, gave it its current baroque appearance.
