St. Pantaleon Castle

In the 14th century, the Winter family likely built the first moated castle. The Lords of Winter are traceable until 1382. A tombstone dated 1420 indicates that Hans Voytsberger was the previous owner of the manor.

Stefan Perger, who died in 1521, still called himself after St. Pantaleon. His son Christoph already used the designation "von Clam". He is considered the progenitor of the Counts Clam-Martinic. St. Pantaleon then passed to Johann Hinterholzer and his son Samuel, who died in 1573. However, the castle had already passed to Dr. Lorenz Kirhammer a year earlier. Subsequently, the castle owners, who were consistently noble, changed relatively quickly.

Hans Wolfgang Tschernembl was followed in 1591 by Johann Ulrich von Starhemberg, Ferdinand Kulmer von Rosenbühel (1618), Katharina Freiin von Salburg (1622), Ludwig Pröller (1653), and Maria Elisabeth Freiin Katzianer von Katzenstein (1659). Under the Salburg family, St. Pantaleon was expanded into a Renaissance moated castle. In the second half of the 17th century, the Counts Franz Leopold and Philipp Jakob von Thürheim took over the lordship. In 1717, Johann Georg Adam Freiherr von Hohenstein was the owner, who was succeeded by his son Johann Georg Leo in 1754. After that, Princess Maria Josepha Rosalia Auersperg appears as the castle owner. Under the Princes Auersperg, who owned the castle until 1889, part of the buildings was demolished and the rest was altered in Baroque style.

Over time, all defensive structures except for the moat disappeared. Only the actual residential building, which could have been the former palas, remained in a greatly simplified form. From 1889 to 1906, St. Pantaleon belonged to the Landgraves Fürstenberg. Since then, there have only been rural or bourgeois owners. Since 1913, renovations and modernizations have taken place. The small, well-maintained castle is inhabited by its owners.
