Stadl Castle

The present-day castle was built on the site of a medieval moated castle, first mentioned in 1265, by the Knights of Stadl. These were vassals of the Wildoners and Stubenbergers.

The family died out in 1882. A Hugo von Stadl is already mentioned in 1180, but it is doubtful whether he owned the fortified building on the Raab. In Eastern Styria, the Lords of Stadl are mentioned several times only in the second half of the 13th century. The fortified courtyard, equipped with a tower, was expanded into a manorial seat around 1540. Hans and Christof von Stadl gave the castle its present form from 1580. The temporarily mortgaged lordship came into the possession of Gotthard Zollner after long inheritance disputes.

However, the disputes did not cease. In 1682, the property had to be ceded to Johann Rudolf Freiherr von Stadl. The castle was already in a very bad condition at that time. In 1730, it was placed under forced administration due to large tax arrears. When this was lifted in 1742, Carl Josef Freiherr von Stadl took over the lordship. In 1767, there was another forced administration. In 1799, the long-time tenant Johann Ernst Fröhlich bought the property.

In the 19th century, the castle belonged to the Ahrenberg family for a time. In the 20th century, Stadl first came to Mr. Fattinger and then to Director Maria Josef Rosner. In 1966, Ing. Hans Graf Kinsky acquired the estate to operate the agriculture himself. The castle was in a very bad condition at that time. It was thoroughly restored and modernized until 1972 and is still inhabited by the family today.
