Stadthagen Castle

The origins of the castle date back to 1224, when Count Adolf III of Schaumburg had a moated castle built on this site. Between 1535 and 1539, the current castle was erected in the same location under Count Adolf XI. The master builder Jörg Unkair, who had previously worked at the Cistercian monastery of Bebenhausen, planned and realized the new building. He personally selected the sandstone from the Bückeberg. The castle was designed as a square complex with four wings, with the northwest corner remaining open towards the town. In contrast to Unkair's earlier projects, a pure residential castle without military functions could be created here.
