Stainach Castle

Stainach Castle is a historic building in the market town of Stainach in the Enns Valley.

Stainach Castle, formerly known as Unterstainach Castle, was the seat of a branch of the Stainach family in the late 13th and early 14th centuries. In the 16th century, the castle was divided into the old and new sections. When the peasant and miner uprising broke out in the Enns Valley in 1525, Unterstainach was completely plundered. The chronicler Wolf Andrä von Stainach wrote the very well-known family chronicle of the Stainach family here. In 1689, Unterstainach was described as very damaged. The floor plan of Stainach Castle on the cadastral map of 1825 shows a closed four-sided building with attached side wings. These and the closed rear side are missing today. According to drawings from the 19th century, the castle building looks like a villa with a pagoda-like roof; Wernbacher spoke in 1900 of a cross between a castle and a villa. Only at the beginning of the 20th century did Stainach Castle acquire its current appearance.

The Stainach family, who had been counts since 1767, sold the castle in 1818. The Stainach family branch died out in 1929. Further owners included - Ritter von Friedau, Eveline von Neumayer, Count Deym. In 1952, the family Harriet and Fritz Hartmann bought Stainach Castle. After Harriet Hartmann's death, the castle passed to her nephew Dkfm. Kaufmann, who lovingly renovated the castle.
