Starhemberg Castle
Starhemberg Castle, also known as Eferding Castle, is a historic structure located in the heart of the city of Eferding in Upper Austria. It has been owned by the Starhemberg family for centuries and now serves as a vibrant cultural center and museum.
History+
A seat of the Bishopric of Passau stood on the site of the current castle as early as the 12th century. In the 14th century, ownership passed to the Counts of Schaunberg, who had the present-day north wing built. After the extinction of the Schaunberg family in the 16th century, the Starhembergs took over the complex and converted the former castle into a palace. In the 18th century, the castle underwent a classical redesign, giving it its current appearance. With a brief interruption between 1630 and 1660, the estate has been in the possession of the princely Starhemberg family for about 450 years.
