Starrein Castle

As early as 1198, an Ortlieb von Staren is mentioned in documents. Members of the family can be traced until the 14th century. The dominion was a fief of the Counts of Hardegg. Around 1366, a "veste ze Stareyn" is mentioned for the first time, which must have been a predecessor building at the site of the current complex.

In 1375, Starrein belonged to the noble von Floyth. From 1431 to 1618, it was owned by the Stockhorner family. They converted the old moated castle into a Renaissance castle around 1570. The Stockhorner family likely emigrated during the Counter-Reformation. In 1664, a Count Engel is attested here as the lord of the manor. In 1698, the Polheimer family took over the dominion.

In 1734, Sigmund Friedrich Reichsgraf von Khevenhüller bought it. In 1685, there was a partial renovation of the buildings. In 1887, a major fire destroyed part of the castle, which, however, could soon be restored. Starrein Castle and the associated estate are now in private ownership, with the owners repeatedly making parts of the premises available for cultural purposes.
