In the municipality of Piding in the Berchtesgadener Land district is Staufeneck Castle, a fortified structure at the foot of the Hochstaufen mountain. Its history dates back to the 12th century.

The origins of Staufeneck Castle lie in the 12th century, when the burgraves of Staufeneck erected the fortress. In 1307, ownership transferred to the Archbishopric of Salzburg, where it served as one of the administrative courts (Pflegegerichte) in the Rupertiwinkel from 1365 to 1805. The castle underwent a renovation in 1503 under Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach, which gave it its current appearance. During the Napoleonic Wars, the area, along with Salzburg, fell to Bavaria in 1810.
