In Frankenmarkt, Upper Austria, Stauff Castle stands approximately 500 meters above sea level. Originally a mill, it evolved into a noble residence and now houses local authorities as well as a museum.

History+

The origins of Stauff Castle date back to around 1450, when it was known as the “Huntsreinermühle” and owned by the brothers Siegmund and Wolfgang Forster. In 1559, Hans Heinrich Geumann is mentioned as the owner. The castle received an upgrade in 1578 when Emperor Rudolf II elevated it to a noble seat. Over the following centuries, the castle changed hands multiple times, including Elias Underholzer, Michael Staufer, and Wolfgang Wagner. Later owners included the Lords of Thenn, Christoph Khevenhüller, and Florian Max Clodi. From 1803, the castle was owned by the Counts Clam-Martinic before passing to the Preuner family in 1810. In 1817, it became the landgravial noble seat of Prince Wrede, and in 1833, Anton Payr acquired the property.
