Stechau Castle

In 1354, the nobles Werner and Heinrich von Stechau are named as feudal tenants, but in 1350 the Kune family also held feudal rights. However, the feudal sovereignty lay with the Ileburgen in Sonnewalde. Albrecht Rassig claimed over half of the village's fiefs in 1474. The village was "schriftsässig" (subject to written law) and was not under the jurisdiction of the Schlieben office but rather the local liege lord or later the manor owner. During the Thirty Years' War, the village was destroyed; in 1645, Stechau was desolate. In 1672, four of twenty hides were still desolate, and seven of eight gardeners.

The von Birckholz family had the baroque castle with its park built in 1752. The only surviving atonement cross in the Schlieben region can be found in the park.

The manor began breeding and releasing pheasants in 1887, so that just two years later the population was so large that the animals could be hunted again.

The Gontard family, who had owned the manor in Stechau since 1899, were dispossessed in 1945 as part of the land reform.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, in 1992, the Munich lawyer Khadjavi-Gontard bought the castle with some land. The family invested a double-digit million sum in the castle and restored the estate to its former glory.

The church and the castle park are the cultural centers of Stechau for many events. The largest annual events are the concerts at the castle as part of the Brandenburg Summer Concerts.
