Stechau Castle

The earliest documented mentions of Stechau date back to 1354, when the nobles Werner and Heinrich von Stechau were named as feudal lords, although the Kune family already held feudal rights in 1350. The feudal sovereignty belonged to the Ileburgs of Sonnewalde. In 1474, Albrecht Raßig claimed more than half of the village's fiefs. Stechau was a script-seated village and was subject to the local feudal lord rather than the Schlieben office. The Thirty Years' War left marks; the village was destroyed and desolate by 1645. It was not until 1752 that the von Birckholz family had the current Baroque castle and park built. From 1887, pheasant breeding was carried out on the manor. The Gontard family, owners since 1899, were dispossessed in 1945 as part of the land reform. After the reunification, in 1992, the Munich lawyer Khadjavi-Gontard acquired the castle with associated lands and invested in its restoration.
