Steegen Castle in the municipality of Steegen, Upper Austria, now serves as an institution for people with disabilities.

History+

The origins of the Steegen estate date back to the 11th century, where it is first mentioned in chronicles. The first documented mention of Steegen Castle occurred in 1371, when it was owned by the Hieber family. In 1696, Johann Achaz Hieber sold the property to Count Heinrich Johann von Strattmann. As he had no direct heirs, Steegen fell to the Peuerbach line of the Strattmann family after his death. Following the dissolution of the Peuerbach Fideicommiss in 1825, Steegen became available for sale.
