Stegen Castle

The origins of the estate date back to the High Middle Ages, when the Einsiedeln Monastery owned land in the region around the year 1000. The Lords of Weiler, presumably the monastery's bailiffs, gained influence here and later became ministerials of the Zähringen dukes. In the 12th century, the Lords of Falkenstein emerged from this family. After the extinction of the Weiler line in the 15th century, the fief passed to Hans von Reischach, who had a fortified castle built on the site of a manor farm at the beginning of the 16th century. The castle chapel, dedicated to Saint Sebastian, was built no later than 1504. After its destruction in the Thirty Years' War, the castle was rebuilt on the existing cellars. In 1702, it came into the possession of the Counts of Kageneck, who initially avoided it. It was not until Philipp Joseph von Kageneck that the castle underwent extensive renovations between 1841 and 1843, with defensive structures and farm buildings being demolished, new buildings erected, and the baroque main building extended by a third floor.
