Stein Castle
Schloss Stein is a castle complex in Petzelsdorf near Fehring in the Thermenland region of Eastern Styria. Today it houses a school.
The original Schloss Stein is the actual princely castle, Schloss am Stein. From 1170, it stood as the main castle of Fürstenfeld. From there, dominion over the area south of Fürstenfeld to Kapfenstein was exercised.
However, the dominion of Stein remained, and the new Schloss Stein was built in Fehring as the seat of power. The building is two-story with an octagonal and a hexagonal tower, as well as outbuildings. Under Christoph Graf Paar in 1776, it was expanded as an administrative seat for his estates around Fehring – in that year, the state bought Schloss Stein in Fürstenfeld, and it became Austria's first tobacco factory. The administration exercised high jurisdiction (including the death penalty) until the administrative reform of 1848.
Today, the St. Martin Technical School for Agriculture and Food Management is housed in the castle.
