Stein Castle

In Stein an der Traun, Bavaria, Schloss Stein is Germany's most significant cave castle. It combines a high castle, a cave castle, and a lower castle.
History+
The origins of the high castle are not fully clarified, with Roman or Celtic roots being suspected. Stein was first documented in 1135. In the early 13th century, the robber knight Hainz von Stein der Wilde is said to have lived here, his story being literarily processed by Lorenz Huebner in 1783. The Törring family owned the castle from the 13th century until 1633. Albert von Törring-Stein and Adam Lorenz von Törring-Stein served as Bishops of Regensburg. In 1633, Count Carl Fugger von Kirchberg acquired the complex, which later passed to the Barons von Lösch through marriage. A change occurred in 1818 with the transformation of the Hofmark into a Patrimonialgericht II. Klasse.
