Steinbach Castle

The Voit von Rieneck family held dominion over Steinbach in the 16th century. The still-preserved, simple two-story wing of the Old Castle with its hip roof dates from this period. A round defensive tower with a dungeon, covered by a conical roof, adjoins it on the street side. The entrance portal is dated 1589 by an inscription. In 1625, the Stolzenberg line of the von Hutten family came into possession of Steinbach through marriage. Christoph Franz von Hutten, who rose to Prince-Bishop of Würzburg in 1724 and ruled the prince-bishopric until 1729, later emerged from this family. He had already taken on the role of head of his family, incorporated into the Rhön-Werra knightly canton, since 1690. He had the New Castle built for his brother Franz Ludwig, who lived in Steinbach, from 1725 to 1728.
