Steinhaus Castle

Steinhaus Castle was first mentioned in 1257 and is located in the municipality of Steinhaus in the district of Wels-Land.

The first owner mentioned was Alber von Polheim, named in 1257. The castle remained in the Polheim family for the next 400 years. As the Polheims were Protestant and did not want to change their faith, they had to sell the castle in 1629, and thus the castle came into the possession of the Catholic Imperial Count Weikart Katzianer von Katzenstein. In 1693, Count Johann Weikhart Katzianer sold the castle to his son-in-law Jakob Friedrich von Eyselsberg. The castle burned down in 1736. In 1766, the castle was rebuilt in its current form. The family of the former Barons von Eiselsberg (current spelling) still owns the castle today. A well-known member of this family was Anton Eiselsberg, one of the founders of the Vienna School of Surgery. The last owner of the castle, Ambassador (ret.) Otto Eiselsberg, who died in 2001, bequeathed the castle to his nephew Christoph Minutillo. Since then, there has been a massive dispute over the inheritance.

The castle is a three-wing building around an inner courtyard. The courtyard is enclosed by arcades, and the castle houses a collection of weapons and family portraits. The four previously existing corner towers were removed after a fire and have not been rebuilt. The facade features sparse decoration with painted columns and stucco cladding. The window grilles on the first floor are noteworthy. The castle is situated in an extensive park area surrounded by a wall. The castle also includes a farmstead with a fish farm (Koi).
