A historic estate in Witten-Bommern, North Rhine-Westphalia, Steinhausen Castle is a structure located on the Muttental mining trail. Its landmark is a round tower on the eastern side.

History+

The origins of Steinhausen Castle date back to the 13th century when it was built by the Lords of Witten to secure a crossing of the Ruhr river. A document from 1297 first mentions the fortified house, known as “Steenhus,” which gave the complex its name. In 1434, the original double castle complex was destroyed by Dortmund troops. Through the marriage of the heiress Jutta to Lutter Staël von Holstein, the knight's seat passed to his family in 1464. Hardenberg Staël von Holstein had the complex rebuilt in 1529, and in 1607, a stepped-gable house and a tower were added.
