A shield-wall castle, Stetten Castle, stands on a western mountain spur above the Kocher Valley in Baden-Württemberg. It remains to this day in the possession of and inhabited by the founding family.

History+

The origins of Stetten Castle date back to the High Middle Ages, with the complex being built around 1200. As early as 1098, an Odelricus de Steten is mentioned in a document. The Knights of Stetten were vassals of the Lords of Hohenlohe during the Staufer period. The castle was repeatedly adapted to contemporary defensive needs without losing its original form. Around 1400, a neck ditch and a curtain wall with flanking towers were added, followed by additional corner towers in the mid-15th century. A dispute with the Hohenlohe family in 1488, which led to the siege of the outer bailey, ended without major destruction.
