Stjärnsund Castle, an impressive structure in the Swedish municipality of Askersund, is perched on a prominent headland between Lake Alsen and a waterway connecting it to Lake Vättern. It stands as a prime example of the Neo-Antique style prevalent during its construction.

History+

The estate's origins date back to 1637, when Johan Gabrielsson Oxenstierna created a property by merging several smaller plots. This grew significantly over time, at one point encompassing large parts of the Askersund and Hammar parishes. After several changes of ownership among noble families, King Charles XIV John acquired the estate in 1823. However, under a royal administrator, the castle fell into disrepair until Oscar I sold it to his son Franz Gustav in 1851. The latter had the building extensively restored under the direction of P. A. Nyström. Prince Franz Gustav, a talented musician, is said to have composed some of his well-known pieces here. After his early death, the estate passed to August and later to the noble Cassel family. Since 1951, the castle has been bequeathed to the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities, which maintains it as a cultural monument.
