Stockern Castle

Stockern Castle is a listed building in Stockern in the Lower Austrian municipality of Meiseldorf.

Stockern Castle stands on the site of a fortified building, first documented at the beginning of the 13th century. This belonged to the Stockhorners until it was captured and largely destroyed by Stephan von Eytzing in 1474, after Ortolf and Ernst von Stockern had joined the nobility's opposition to Frederick III.

Hans von Wullerstorf received permission in 1484 to rebuild the broken fortress, but did not carry out this project. Either under Ulrich von Haselbach, who took over the lordship in 1507, or under his successor, the castle was rebuilt as a fortified palace. In 1576, the Counts of Lamberg had renovations carried out in the Renaissance style, which gave the castle the appearance documented by Schmidt and still preserved today. The castle later passed into the possession of the Lords of Engelshofen. Pauline von Engelshofen married a Baron Suttner, so the castle came into the hands of the Suttner family. A fire at the building is documented by Martin Johann Schmidt's 1772 painting St. Florian Saves the Burning Stockern Castle. In 1889, Bertha von Suttner wrote her work Lay Down Your Arms! in this castle.

Today it belongs to an agricultural estate.
