Strasburg Castle stands high above the town of the same name in the Gurk Valley of Carinthia. As the former episcopal seat of the Bishops of Gurk, it played a central role in the region's history.

History+

The first documented mention of Strasburg occurred in 1147 under the name "Strazburch". Bishop Roman I of Gurk had the castle built to demonstrate his independence from the Archbishop of Salzburg. The original construction, approximately 70 meters long, already reached its current size. In 1179, the castle was besieged and largely destroyed in 1180, leading to extensive reconstruction. Referred to as a castle until the first half of the 16th century, the complex subsequently transformed into a palace and served as an episcopal residence until 1783.
