In the town of Strehla, on a hill steeply sloping towards the Elbe River, Strehla Castle stands as an edifice whose origins trace back to the early Middle Ages. It is among the oldest foundations in the region and combines architectural elements from various epochs.

History+

A Slavic ruler's seat is believed to have existed here even before the year 900. The construction of Strehla Castle, later transformed into a palace, took place after 928. Its strategic location served to protect a river crossing near a ford. In the 10th century, the complex was mentioned as a Burgward. A conflict between King Henry II and Duke Bolesław I Chrobry led to the castle's destruction by fire in 1002. In 1064, ownership passed to the Bishops of Naumburg. From 1384, the castle was granted as a fief to the von Pflugk family, who held the property until their expropriation in 1945.
