Stubenberg Castle (Gernrode)

Next to the collegiate church, Hotel Stubenberg is the second landmark of the town of Gernrode. It is perched on the edge of a plateau of the mountain of the same name. The predecessor building was a hunting lodge and pleasure palace built by Prince Victor Friedrich of Anhalt-Bernburg. Over time, this building was expanded into a manor and guesthouse and managed by a tenant. From 1840, the Stubenberg was easily accessible, as the road from Quedlinburg was extended into the Harz mountains.

From 1900, the building with its additions and alterations no longer met the demands. In 1914, demolition and new construction began, which was completed in 1915. It largely follows the cubature of the predecessor building. It is a plastered three-wing building on a high granite basement. The neoclassical interior furnishings are still partially preserved. Until 1945, the hotel was a focal point in the social life of the town. At the end of April 1945, a US general and his intelligence staff took up quarters in the hotel. In June, the Americans left Gernrode in accordance with the Potsdam Agreement, making way for Soviet troops. Whether these or the Americans plundered the hotel's furnishings could no longer be determined later.

After that, the Stubenberg was used as a hospital and accommodation for refugees until 1947. Subsequently, it became the property of the FDGB and was used as an FDGB holiday home until 1990/91. With the reunification, the FDGB ceased to exist and the building passed to the Treuhandanstalt. In 1992, the home was sold to a private investor who carried out extensive renovation measures. However, the investor ran into financial difficulties and a new owner had to be found. For a short time, the Stubenberg was used as a seminar house. Between 2004 and 2011, the building stood empty and for sale. A fire in 2008, presumably caused by arson, could not spread due to firewalls and caused only minor damage. Since 2011, the Stubenberghaus has been renovated and refurnished.
