In the municipality of Botkyrka on Lake Mälaren, Sturehov Castle is located, an example of Gustavian architecture. Originally conceived as a tax-exempt manor, it now serves as a modern conference center and houses a café.

History+

The origins of Sturehov date back to the Middle Ages, when the village of Afrehulta with four farmsteads existed on this site. Reichsmarschall Svante Sture d. J. united these into an estate. In the 1580s, the property received the status of a Säteri, a tax-exempt estate, and Svante Sture's son Mauritz Sture renamed it Sturehov. After the death of Mauritz Sture and his wife in 1654, Sturehov passed by will to Reichsmarschall Johan Axelsson Oxenstierna. The castle changed hands several times and was owned by noble families such as Wrangel, Banér, and Piper.
