Styrum Castle

In Mülheim an der Ruhr, Styrum Castle is a former noble residence that evolved from a royal court to a comital ancestral seat and is now used for various purposes.
History+
The origins of Styrum Castle date back to the 11th century, when a royal court of King Henry IV existed here, which he transferred to the Imperial Abbey of Kaiserswerth in 1067. In 1289, Count Dietrich von Altena-Isenberg and his son Eberhard I erected the first fortified house here after they had to leave their ancestral seat Limburg following the Battle of Worringen. Styrum became the ancestral seat of the Limburg-Styrum family branch. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the first manor house was built, and in 1442, the property was elevated to an imperial fief. After an inheritance division in 1644, Styrum once again became the residence of a family line. In the 18th century, a fire led to Baroque redesigns.
