Süßenstein Castle is a Gothic structure in Hüttenberg, Carinthia. Integrated directly into the village landscape, it is accessible via a bridge. Its history dates back to Roman times, evident in preserved Romanesque and Gothic architectural elements.

History+

The first documented mention of the castle was in 1247 as Burg Althaus, with Wulfingus de Huse named as its owner. In 1488, the castle repelled an attack by the Hungarians. Between 1610 and the 19th century, Süßenstein served as the official residence of the mining judge of Hüttenberg, thus being the center of the mining court. During this period, the castle was repeatedly besieged by miners.
