Sumarein Castle

The former Sumarein Castle – today the rectory of St. Marein – is a two-story, hook-shaped complex with two separate wings, surrounded by a rubble stone wall and a garden to the west. The first documented mention of the complex dates back to 1537. In 1665, parts of it were demolished. It is accessible on the north wing and in the south through a round-arched portal, quoin-framed on the inside, chamfered on the outside, with an ornamented keystone and impost stone from the end of the 16th century. The northern gate hall has a cross-rib vault, accompanied by a torus molding, with central rosettes. The long, two-story residential wing features quoin framing and a quoin band below the eaves. The upper floor is equipped with profiled stone-framed windows and cavetto sills. The interior rooms on both floors are fitted with cross-rib vaults and barrel vaults with lunettes. The remarkable coffered wooden doors are a work of the 17th century. The central hall features heavy stucco from around 1670, with leaf garlands, rosettes, and shell decor. In the northwest is a carriage shed with a segmental arch opening, dated to the early 19th century; next to it is a cellar room with a chamfered, round-arched frame and barrel vault from the 16th/17th century. In the southwest, a niche chapel with a gable roof, built in the 19th century, can be seen in the enclosing wall. The rectory holds various furniture, paintings, and sculptures.
