Sunzing Castle

Sunzing Castle is located in the Untersunzing district of the municipality of Mining in the Braunau am Inn district.

Allegedly, the seat was initially called "Gertraudskirchen"; this manor farm became the ancestral seat of the Sunzingers in 1435. The small castle was rebuilt in stone between 1474 and 1481 by the Sunzingers, replacing an earlier wooden structure. In a side chapel of the church in Mining, there is the tombstone (made by the Passau stonemason master Georg Gartner) of Marx Sunzinger, who died on April 30, 1508, with coats of arms and helmet crest. Wolfgang Sunzinger, who was expelled in 1538 and was the caretaker of Haselbach near Passau, is also buried here. Sunzing possessed low jurisdiction. After the death of Wolfgang Sunzinger, the Puchleitners became owners. In 1650/51, Wolf Siegmund Puchleitner built the extension. The castle chapel was consecrated on March 22, 1650, and was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The chapel was destroyed by fire on March 12, 1786, but was subsequently rebuilt. Wolf Siegmund Puchleitner was elevated to the rank of baron by Emperor Ferdinand I. After the death of Wolfgang Siegmund, the property passed to his eldest son in 1683. From him, it passed in 1697 to Baron Johann Wilhelm von Lützelburg, the son-in-law of Johann Adam von Puchleiten. In 1842, Sunzing came to Christian Baron von Esebeck, who united it with the Mamling estate. In 1870, Count Zdenko von Strachwitz, an Upper Austrian member of parliament and estate owner, acquired Mamling and thus also Sunzing.

In the 1960s, Sunzing belonged to two brothers, one of whom ran a farm and the other a guesthouse. The left wing of the castle served as a farmhouse, while the guesthouse was housed in the main wing. Access to both was only possible from the courtyard side, as the main entrance to the castle was walled up.
