Sunzing Castle

The origins of Sunzing Castle date back to 1435, when the farmstead, initially known as “Gertraudskirchen,” became the ancestral seat of the Sunzinger family. Between 1474 and 1481, the Sunzingers erected a new stone building on this site, replacing an earlier wooden structure. In 1508, Marx Sunzinger passed away, and his tombstone can be found in a side chapel of the church in Mining. Wolfgang Sunzinger, who was expelled in 1538, also found his final resting place here. After Wolfgang Sunzinger's death, the property passed to the Puchleitner family. Wolf Siegmund Puchleitner initiated an extension in 1650/51 and consecrated the castle chapel to the Holy Mary on March 22, 1650. This chapel was destroyed by fire in 1786 but was subsequently rebuilt. Wolf Siegmund Puchleitner was elevated to the rank of Baron by Emperor Ferdinand I.
