Surenburg Castle in Riesenbeck is a moated castle, considered the most famous of its kind in the Tecklenburg region.

History+

The exact period of Surenburg's construction is not documented, but it is presumed to have originated around 1400 as a noble residence following the conquest of Bevergern by the Bishop of Münster. Its first documented mention was in 1474, when it served as the residence of the Lords of Langen. In 1612, the estate passed into the possession of the Münster family. A change occurred in 1786 when Carl Heinrich Heereman von Zuydtwyck, a nobleman from Roermond in the Netherlands, acquired the castle. His descendants still inhabit Surenburg today.
