Suresnes Castle

Suresnes Palace, also known as Werneckschlössl, is a small palace in the Schwabing district of Munich. Suresnes Palace was built between 1715 and 1718 by Johann Baptist Gunetzrhainer, modeled after the Château de Suresnes near Paris, for cabinet secretary Franz von Wilhelm. Franz von Wilhelm had spent several months with Elector Max Emanuel at the Château de Suresnes during the Elector's exile.

After the small palace had been neglected since the beginning of the 19th century, it was occupied by Carl August von Steinheil in 1855. Later, in 1869 and 1870, Elisabet Ney lived and worked there.

At the end of the 19th century, the small palace was a popular meeting place for young artists. In 1919, Paul Klee had his studio there for three months, and in the late 1940s, it was the last workplace of Leo Samberger.

In 1937, the small palace was acquired by the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising. Since 1967, it has served as a conference center for the Catholic Academy in Bavaria.

Suresnes Palace serves as the residence for the Archbishop of Munich and Freising, Reinhard Marx, until the renovation work in the Archbishop's Palace is completed.
