Svaneholm Castle

On an island in Lake Svaneholmssjö in the Swedish province of Skåne lies Svaneholm Castle. Originally designed as a fortress, it evolved into a Renaissance castle.
History+
Around 1530, Mourids Jespen Sparre began constructing a brick castle on an island in the lake. Soon thereafter, the complex underwent a transformation in the Renaissance style. In the late 17th century, Axel Gyllenstierna had the east wing extended and redesigned in the Italian Baroque style. After that, no major structural changes were made, only the moat was filled in during the 19th century. Following the death of the last owner in 1935, the local heritage association acquired the castle.
