Svartsjö Castle

Royal residences existed on the site of the current palace as early as the Middle Ages. Gustav I Vasa had a Renaissance castle with a round central part built here, which was later expanded by his sons. This castle was destroyed by fire in 1687, and its building materials were used for the expansion of Tre Kronor Castle in Stockholm. The current palace building was constructed between 1734 and 1739 on behalf of King Frederick as a hunting lodge for Queen Ulrika Eleonora. The architect was Carl Hårleman. In the 1770s, Queen Louisa Ulrika had the palace converted into her widow's residence, with Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz responsible for the expansion with two annexes and a clock lantern. After Louisa Ulrika's death in 1782, the palace fell into disrepair. From 1891 to 1966, it served as a prison, initially for forced laborers and alcoholics, and later also for serious criminals. After the prison was dissolved, the palace underwent extensive restoration from 1994 to 2003, during which parts of its prison era were also made visible.

Svartsjö Palace is located in the town of Svartsjö, on Färingsö Island in Ekerö Municipality, Stockholm County, Sweden. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 14 meters above sea level.

Visitors can explore Svartsjö Palace today. It is managed by the National Property Board of Sweden and is open to the public. The palace houses a café, and a Baroque festival takes place during the summer months.
