Syrgenstein Castle, also known as Sürgenstein, is a historical structure in Heimenkirch, Bavaria. It is the only preserved castle in the Lindau district on a Nagelfluh rock above the Upper Argen river.

History+

The origins of a predecessor castle of Syrgenstein date back to 1265, when it was first mentioned in a document. The Sürg family, a minor noble knightly lineage who made a name for themselves as commanders, hereditary marshals, and imperial master chefs, was closely associated with the site. Around 1480 to 1490, Veit Sürg reacquired the once-lost property and had the current castle built. The Sürgs were later elevated to the status of Imperial Barons by Emperor Ferdinand III.
