Sythen Castle
Sythen Castle is a moated castle in the Sythen district of Haltern am See.
The former castle was first mentioned in 758 under King Pippin. Over time, various noble families resided on the estate. From 1821 to 1965, Sythen Castle was owned by the von Westerholt und Gysenberg family.
In 1946, the castle was leased to the Caritasverband Recklinghausen, which established a children's recreation home here, and in 1970 it was sold to the association. The association had the manor house demolished in 1971 and sold the estate in 1979 to Winfried Humberg, who sold it to the city of Haltern in 1989.
Originally preserved are the gatehouse and the former chapel with a remarkable rib vault. Today, after much civic engagement, the complex is part of public life.
