Tabor Castle

Tabor Castle in Neuhaus am Klausenbach is located in the Raab tri-border nature park in the border region of Austria, Hungary, and Slovenia.

The castle, with its hook-shaped floor plan, was built in 1469 by the Styrian mercenary leader Ulrich Pessnitzer. From 1607, the castle was owned by the Batthyánys and served as an alternative residence for the dilapidated Neuhaus Castle. During the Thirty Years' War from 1618 to 1648, the castle was a refuge for many Styrian Protestants. In the 17th century, it was baroque-styled. Later, Tabor Castle was only the seat of the manorial administration and was finally converted into a residence for estate employees. The oldest building in the Jennersdorf district today was continuously inhabited until 1964. The castle, which is still owned by the Batthyánys, was leased by the Rupprecht family. It was restored in 2002 and 2003.

The castle courtyard with two-story arcades is used in summer for opera performances and numerous other events. The round tower with a coat of arms cartouche is also worth seeing. The castle now houses a "Heurigen" (wine tavern) restaurant.
