Tannbach Castle

Tannbach Castle is a private castle complex in Upper Austria in the market town of Gutau in the Mühlviertel region. The castle was first mentioned in a document around 1400 as a "Freisitz" (a noble's residence). It received its current appearance at the end of the 19th century. The castle also includes a considerable estate with a farmyard.

The first owner, Ulrich Galsberger, appears in the feudal register of Duke Albrecht in 1400. In 1459, Mathes Chienast bought the castle and it remained in the family's possession until 1550. Around 1550, the castle briefly passed by purchase to the Weissenauer family, who previously held the position of mayor of Freistadt and also acquired the Fuchsenhof. Since the family was not elevated to the nobility, they sold Tannbach to Ernst Hack von Bornimb. Count Johann Karl von Thürheim followed, until Johann Karl Mauer von Hohenstegen zu Eydendorf took over the castle. Through marriage, the property passed to Philipp von Frey, who died in 1730. In 1756, a Hack von Bornimb was again the owner of the castle.

In 1787, Bartholomäus Kiendler acquired Tannbach, and in 1805, Karl Pfülb von Ehrenheim took it over. His son handed the castle over to Josef Limbrunner in 1823. In 1878, Heinrich von Planck bought the estate. Between 1880 and 1906, Alexander Adler was the owner, until Count Ludwig Polzer-Hoditz bought the castle in 1906. The castle remained in the family's possession until 2007; since then, it has been inhabited by a young family.
