Taufkirchen Castle

Taufkirchen Water Castle is a moated castle in Taufkirchen an der Vils. The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1263 with its owner Grimold von Taufkirchen. Later, the Lords of Fraunberg ruled here. From 1544 to 1672, the Fuggers were the owners, followed by the Barons of Puech.

In 1917, citizens of Taufkirchen founded a cooperative and bought the castle and the brewery. In 1919, the Upper Bavarian Rural Poor Association acquired the castle and estate of Taufkirchen. Five years later, it became the Upper Bavarian State Welfare Institution and in 1970, the District Hospital. Since the mid-1990s, cultural events have been held in the water castle.

In 2005, Nico Forster acquired the castle, who passed away in 2010. Until 2010, the castle was renovated and parts of it are available to the municipality. The municipality of Taufkirchen is currently considering purchasing the castle from Forster's community of heirs.
