Taxinge Castle

The first mention of the Taxinge estate dates back to 1281, when King Magnus Ladulås confirmed Duke Erik's donation of land to the Strängnäs Cathedral. In 1481, Taxinge became an outpost of Gripsholm Castle, which at that time belonged to Sten Sture the Elder, and thereafter remained crown property for a long time. It was not until 1681 that Captain Johan von Westphal detached the estate from royal ownership and converted it into a tax-exempt Frälsegut in 1685. In 1755, the merchant Gustav Kierman acquired Taxinge and left it to his brother-in-law, General Johan Didrik Duvall. The builder of the current castle, mining councillor Anders von Wahrendorff, bought the estate in 1795. Between 1807 and 1813, he had the main building constructed according to plans by Carl Christoffer Gjörwell, with the detached side wings being somewhat older. After the death of Wahrendorff's son, court marshal Martin von Wahrendorff, the castle changed hands several times through inheritance and marriage within various noble families. Shortly before its sale to Handelsbanken in 1923, it belonged to Lieutenant Count Knut Arvid Posse. The bank sold Taxinge Castle in 1928 to the horse breeder Ernst Sjögren. After his death in 1969, the municipality of Södertälje took over the property before it passed to the municipality of Nykvarn in 1999.

Taxinge Castle is located in Nykvarn, within the municipality of Nykvarn in the Stockholm region, Sweden. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 13 meters above sea level.

Visitors can tour the castle today. It also houses a restaurant and serves as a conference center.
