Taxis Castle

The origins of the present-day castle date back to the Middle Ages, when Trugenhofen Castle stood on this site. This was the seat of the imperial ministeriales, the Lords of Trugenhofen. The castle changed hands multiple times, passing to the Counts of Oettingen, the Lords of Hürnheim zu Katzenstein, the Lords of Westernach, the Schenken von Castell, and the Lords of Leonrod. In 1734, Anselm Franz von Thurn and Taxis acquired the estate for 150,000 guilders. Under the princely family, the castle was expanded into a summer residence, with master builders such as Joseph Dossenberger, Johann Georg Hitzelberger, and Thomas Scheidhauf involved. The complex combines Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Classicism, and Neo-Gothic styles.
