Thayngen Castle
Thayngen Castle, also known as “Zum Oberhof”, is a historic structure in the Swiss canton of Schaffhausen. It once served as the seat of the Schaffhausen bailiff and as a summer residence, and today it is privately owned, boasting a remarkable history.
History+
Between 1593 and 1604, Hans Im Thurn-Stokar replaced the original “masonry house” with the current castle building. His son, Hans Im Thurn-Peyer, added a northern extension to the property in 1615. A comprehensive Baroque renovation took place from 1683 to 1697 under Bailiff Johannes Im Thurn. The castle originally had two stair towers, one of which still exists today and received a polygonal broken spire during a recent renovation. In 1798, the Im Thurn family lost their bailiwick rights, after which the castle passed into the possession of a farmer.
