In the district of Theuerwang in the municipality of Vorchdorf in the Gmunden district of Upper Austria, the former Theuerwang Castle, now an inn, is located. Originally a moated castle, the building still harbors traces of its historical substance and now serves as a restaurant.

History+

The first documented mention of Theuerwang occurred in 1279 in a sales letter to Wilhering Abbey, naming an owner called Tewrwanger. Around 1300, his sons Otaker and Christianus appeared as witnesses in various documents. In 1336, Heinrich von Alharting sold the court of Twerwang on behalf of Otaker's children to Kremsmünster Abbey. The Theuerwanger family, also known as Eggenberger, served the city of Steyr and the Schaunbergers. Later, Theuerwang passed to Ulrich von Capellen before being repurchased by Heinrich the Theurwanger in 1346. Further family members, including Johann Theuerwanger (1354) and Chunigunde, wife of Weimar Teuerwanger (1372), were mentioned. After 1525, the Theuerwanger family disappeared from historical records.
