Thierlstein Castle

Thierlstein Castle was first mentioned in a document around 1000 and, thanks to a fortunate turn of events, has been spared from destruction over the centuries.

The core building of the castle with its round keep and adjoining residential building was built around 1360. In the 17th century, several farm buildings were constructed. Through several alterations to the castle complex and the erection of further farm buildings, the development of Thierlstein Castle steadily continued. Beer was first brewed in Thierlstein around the year 1600.

By the end of the 19th century, the entire estate had grown to essentially its current form, consisting of the imposing castle complex and the extensive farmyard. However, at the end of the 19th century, the ancestral noble family had fallen on hard times and was forced to sell the castle and the Thierlstein estate, so that both – a small sensation for the time – fell into bourgeois hands. Josef Sauer, son of estate owner Josef Sauer from Hötzing and grandfather of the current senior boss Rudolf Sauer, did not miss this unique opportunity and acquired the economically usable parts of the estate in 1899, namely the inn, the brewery, the farm buildings, and the agricultural land.

Since then, the farmyard and the "Schlossbrauerei Thierlstein" (Thierlstein Castle Brewery) have been owned by the Sauer family. The castle, however, soon found a noble owner again. The brewery was operated by Rudolf Sauer until 1978. In today's festival hall, the former brewhouse, and in the adjoining rooms, numerous pieces of equipment from the old brewery still serve as decorative items. "Thierlsteiner Bier" is still available today and is served at events in the festival hall. Between 2006 and 2008, the buildings were extensively renovated by the current owner, Marie-Theres Fischer, née Sauer.
