Thurnhof Castle

The origins of the estate date back to 1140, when it was first mentioned in a document as Pregrat, which means "area in front of the castle." Meinhalm de Praegrat, a ministerialis of the Diocese of Gurk, was responsible at that time for managing the diocesan property in the region. Thurnhof itself was first mentioned as a Gurk fief at the beginning of the 13th century, and in the mid-13th century, names such as Engelbert de Turris appeared in documents. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the estate belonged to the Hofman von Wald family. The current castle was built in the 16th century, with Veit Jochner, cathedral provost of Gurk, driving its expansion around 1550. Around 1700, the Egger family took over the property and had the interior renovated. In 1899, Karl Funder acquired the castle, which remained in family ownership until 1989 before passing to the Treppo family.
