History+

The origins of Thurnstein Castle date back to the 13th century when it was first built on the hill near Postmünster. The estate changed hands multiple times. The castle acquired its current appearance at the end of the 17th century when it was converted into a three-winged complex open to the south, featuring three stories and two towers. During World War II, the castle served as quarters for the SS and the Gauleitung Bayreuth, which led to fears of the town's destruction in the final days of the war in 1945.
